Summary: This study aims to expand the focus of media and body image research by examining content heterogeneity. Exposure to positive, negative, and heterogeneous body image themes on television elicited positive interpretations, suggesting youth engaged in protective filtering. These interpretations indirectly increased body satisfaction. Exposure to negative and heterogeneous themes also led to negative interpretations, yet these interpretations did not affect eventual state body image outcomes. These findings highlight the importance of considering content heterogeneity and interpretation formation in media research, relevant not only for television but also for social media where similar content variations exist.
