Summary: The study found that men, Black youth, and youth from higher socioeconomic backgrounds reported using generative AI (genAI) more frequently and for a wider range of purposes. Using genAI for learning and exploration was associated with lower levels of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. In contrast, using genAI for social-emotional support was linked to higher levels of depression and anxiety. Gender differences emerged: among women, using genAI for task automation and dating/sexuality-related purposes was associated with poorer mental health, while among men, using genAI for emotional support was linked to greater loneliness. Race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status did not significantly change these relationships. Overall, the findings suggest that genAI may have both beneficial and harmful associations with youth mental health depending on how it is used. Learning-focused use appears potentially protective, whereas relying on genAI for emotional or relational support may be associated with worse mental health outcomes. However, longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether genAI use contributes to these outcomes or reflects existing mental health challenges.
