Workshop: "Dance in Silent Film: An Analytical Approach

This workshop focuses on dance in silent film. Open to PhD Students.

In the first part of the workshop, students will be introduced to this topic through an overview of the historical context and the possible analytical approaches to choreographic on-screen performances. Subsequently it will be presented the case of W.I.S.S.PE.R. project (Women’s Impact in Silent Screen Performance Reloaded), the postdoctoral research that has been carried out by film scholar Elisa Uffreduzzi at Université libre de Bruxelles.

In the second part of the workshop, students will be required to do a practical work of analysis and cataloguing of dance in silent film, on a selection of films. For this reason, students are preferably required to bring their own laptops.

Elisa Uffreduzzi (PhD) is a film scholar. She is research fellow at Università degli Studi di Roma “Tor Vergata”. Between 2021 and 2023 she was Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at Université Libre de Bruxelles for the accomplishment of the research project W.I.S.S.PE.R. (https://wissperatulb.com). Her publications include the book La danza nel cinema muto italiano (Aracne, 2017) and she is currently working on the book Resounding Whispers: The Impact of Women on Silent Screen Performance (Kaplan, 2024).
